The fortress

This impressive construction has dominated the city since 1361. It has been a precious refuge for the inhabitants and for the Republic of Siena after their defeat against the Duchy of Florence during the famous battle of Scannagallo in 1554 (also know as the battle of Marciano).

Today the massive walls welcome festive events such as the traditional Jazz & Wine Festival which takes place in the fortress garden every year in July.

The Civic and Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art exhibits paintings and sculptures. The Glass Museum traces the history of the birth of glass. Located inside the castle of Poggio alle Mura, the museum houses an interesting collection of tools for working glass used by the Egyptians up to the Romans but also by the great Venetian masters.

The characteristic and famous narrow tower of the Palazzo dei Priori overlooks the main square. All around the main square, known as Piazza del Popolo, you will find beautiful shops of local artisan products but also wine bars where you can taste the finest nectars of the area.

Also worth visiting are the churches of Sant ‘Agostino, Sant’ Egidio and San Francesco but also the Palazzo Vescovile.
